Every game comes to an end, as Sony Pictures Entertainment has announced that a Jumanji sequel is officially in production, but it will be the franchise’s last.

The announcement was made via the film’s official X/Twitter account, which wrote, “New level unlocked. Jumanji Movie is officially in production,” alongside a black and white image of the film’s four lead cast members – Jack Black (A Minecraft Movie), Dwayne Johnson (Red Notice), Kevin Hart (Central Intelligence), and Karen Gillan (Guardians of the Galaxy), during a table read.
This was further confirmed by Johnson on his Instagram page, where he also revealed that the sequel will be the last in the franchise. “What a massive, fun, heartfelt adventure,” he wrote, “Feels emotionally appropriate for our beloved Jumanji franchise to end on this beautiful grace note of our final film… Let’s make a good one.”
The Jumanji film series began with the Robin Williams-led debut feature in 1995, and was based on a 1981 fantasy children’s picture book written by author Chris Van Allsburg. The film would go on to receive a space-based sequel in 2005, Zathura: A Space Adventure, also based on Allsburg’s 2002 book. The franchise would go on to receive a modern sequel in 2017, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, which introduced its four new core cast members, with the latest entry in the franchise being the 2019 sequel, Jumanji: The Next Level.

Unlike the original Jumanji movie, which centred on a supernatural board game that releases jungle-based hazards on its players with every turn they take, the two modern film sequels transformed the concept into a video game format, where its characters get trapped inside the game and take on different avatars, forcing them to venture through its world to find a way out. With the next Jumanji film being the franchise’s last, it remains to be seen if it will continue the video game themes of its two predecessors, or if it might tie back to the original 1995 film’s board game to end the series back where it all began.
The Jumanji sequel is set to release in theatres on 11 December 2026.
