James Cameron Is Pushing For ‘Alita: Battle Angel’ Sequel

Despite being well-known for films in massively successful franchises like Avatar or Terminator, filmmaker James Cameron has not forgotten one of his arguably less well-received, but still immensely popular films, 2019’s Alita: Battle Angel, as he has made a promise to develop a sequel alongside director Robert Rodriguez (Sin City).

“I appreciate the loyalty of the Alita fans,” Cameron told Empire in a recent interview, “Robert Rodriguez and I have sworn a blood oath to do at least one more Alita movie. In fact, we’re thinking of an architecture that bridges to a third film, but we’ll be satisfied if we can make one more. And we’re making progress on that.”

“Now that I have a home in Austin, Texas, about three miles from [Robert’s] place, I think we’ll probably get more serious about that as soon as I wrap the mix [for Avatar] here in a few weeks,” the 71-year-old added.

Based on the manga Battle Angel Alita by Yukito Kishiro, the 2019 film starred Rosa Salazar (Maze Runner franchise) as the titular Alita, a cybernetic woman built by Dr Ido (Christoph Waltz, Inglourious Basterds), who sets out to learn about her past and find her true identity. Despite its massive budget and lengthy development time, the film only told part of the manga’s story and left fans clamouring for a satisfying conclusion.

While Cameron’s comments are certainly encouraging news for fans, the filmmaker is currently focused on Pandora for now, with Avatar: Fire and Ash, the third chapter in his iconic science fiction franchise that’s set for release soon on 19 December, so perhaps once he clears this major hurdle, he might have the time to focus on another round of mechanised, big-eyed heroines and more Motorball.
