Star Trek Warps Into Another Reboot From Dungeons & Dragons Film Co-Directors

Paramount Pictures is embarking on yet another reboot voyage, as it’s bringing back the USS Enterprise with a new Star Trek movie, this time helmed by Spider-Man: Homecoming writers and Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley.

As reported by Deadline, the duo’s upcoming reboot will be a completely new take on the franchise, and while no plot details have been announced yet, the film will not be connected to any previous or current movies or TV series, meaning it might introduce brand new characters this time around.

Tracing its roots back to 1966, the sci-fi franchise began as a TV series created by Gene Roddenberry, and followed Captain Kirk, Spock, and the Enterprise crew as they ventured through space. The series was cancelled after just three seasons, but gained massive popularity due to reruns. The franchise would go on to receive multiple movies and TV series from 1979 to 2005, including Star Trek: The Next Generation, often cited as the most successful sci-fi show in history, and 1995’s Star Trek: Voyager, known for introducing fan-favourite character Seven of Nine.

In 2009, the franchise was rebooted with a J.J. Abrams-directed film, which starred a new cast of young actors like Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto, meant to revive it for the modern audience. The film would go on to see two sequels, 2013’s Star Trek Into Darkness and 2016’s Star Trek Beyond, which marked the final film in the franchise until now.

As for Goldstein and Daley’s upcoming reboot attempt, hopes are high that it can reignite interest for such a classic franchise and a pillar of sci-fi pop culture, as according to Deadline’s sources, early screenings for the reboot tested “through the roof”, with the film planned for release in 2026.
