Certain brands have become synonymous with the product category they compete in – Microsoft for computer operating systems, Nintendo for game consoles, Samsung for Android phones, Apple for tablets, Porsche for sports cars, Maggi for instant noodles, Cadbury for chocolate, Coca-Cola for soda – the list goes on. What is rare to see is one of these brands getting displaced, but we’re close, as several vacuum cleaning brands are looking to be the new Hoover. And while some might be quick to name Dyson as the leader, it’s not the only player when it comes to cordless vacuums.

Make no mistake – Dyson clearly leads the charge with sleek, quiet models that balance performance and design, but if your home is looking for more, the Shark EvoPower System NEO+ is here with a clear goal to rival Dyson’s cleaning power, while adding a self-cleaning dock into the mix.

Out of the box, the Shark EvoPower System NEO+ comes in 5 main components: the cordless vacuum unit, the Auto-Empty Dock, a Duster Crevice Tool, an Upholstery Tool, and a Motorised Pet Tool. The main cleaning unit measures approximately 1.06m in height when assembled, with the upper handle housing the dust container and motor. On the controls, there are three buttons. A power button, an Eco mode button, and a Boost mode button allow users to toggle between different cleaning intensities. The entire unit weighs 1.7 kg, with the top handheld section weighing around 1.3 kg, and the motorised cleaning head contributing the remaining 0.4 kg. Its Flexology swivel function allows the wand to bend up to 90 degrees, making it convenient for reaching under furniture and low spaces.

The Auto-Empty Dock is one of the Shark EvoPower System NEO+’s best features, which serves as both a charging and self-cleaning base. Once docked, the vacuum automatically clears its bin through a strong, dry suction process in under 10 seconds that, while noisy, is highly effective. The vacuum slides and locks neatly into the dock, with the base of the dock measuring approximately 40 cm by 27 cm, including the accessory holder.

The dock houses two collection chambers, with the right side collecting larger debris, while the left side handles finer dust particles via the pre-motor foam filter. The right chamber can be completely removed and washed, while the left chamber allows only the pre-motor foam filter to be detached for cleaning. This separation system works efficiently and makes disposal cleaner. In addition, a cable management handle keeps the wires neatly tucked away at the back.

The dust compartment, however, is on the smaller side. After cleaning an entire apartment, it was about half full, which means users will likely depend on the Auto-Empty Dock to clear it regularly, to move the dirt from the handheld to the docking station. The suction pressure of the unit seems to help compact the debris more efficiently, which may help reduce how often it needs to be emptied, but this is something you’ll need to clear at least weekly, depending on your frequency of use. Do note that you can manually clean the dust compartment with your fingers, but it can get messy, so using the dock, simply by inserting the handheld, is a far more convenient and cleaner option.

The vacuum includes three primary attachments. A duster crevice tool for tight corners and edges, an upholstery tool designed for smaller surfaces such as sofas and chairs, and a motorised hand tool ideal for beds and sofas. Each tool performs well in its intended role, allowing users to tailor their cleaning approach throughout the home. The charging base includes designated holders for each attachment, enabling the unit to be stored, charged, and organised in one compact footprint. This all-in-one storage and cleaning system enhances convenience, providing users with not just powerful suction but a fully integrated cleaning station. The only caveat is that the holders do not fasten securely, so moving the dock can cause tools to become loose.

Shark Evopower

Suction performance is where the Shark EvoPower System NEO+ stands out. It handled pet hair and long strands exceptionally well, outperforming the Dyson PencilVac in some cases. Hair that usually requires multiple passes with the Dyson was picked up in one go by the EvoPower System NEO+, with the Anti Hair Wrap technology effectively preventing tangles around the roller. This is a new-fangled feature found in China brands such as Dreame and Ecovacs that effectively either snips the strands of hair or shoves it to one side of the cleaning head, preventing the hair from getting tangled up in the moving cleaning head and causing issues.

The vacuum also comes with three selectable power modes. Eco, Normal, and Boost, making it easy to match cleaning intensity with the task at hand. The Smart IQ Pro Floor Detect feature automatically optimises suction strength depending on the load of debris picked up.

Shark Evopower

In Normal mode, a single charge lasted 45 minutes, while the unit drained itself on Boost mode in under 20 minutes. Eco mode delivers the longest runtime of up to 60 minutes with reduced suction power for lighter cleaning, while boost provides maximum suction for intensive tasks but drains the battery faster, lasting around 20 minutes.

The vacuum’s battery indicator consists of three light bars, and we tested the unit in a 1,033 square-foot five-room HDB flat that was filled with a fair amount of dog hair, long hair, and daily dust. After vacuuming the apartment for about 15 minutes, one light bar was depleted, suggesting a total runtime of roughly 45 minutes on a full charge, and a full charge takes around 3.5 hours from a completely drained battery. Although not without a few quirks.

The trade-off, however, is noise. The vacuum is noticeably louder than the Dyson, both during operating the vacuum and when the dock’s cleaning function is activated. Due to its lightweight, the EvoPower System NEO+ offers smooth manoeuvrability, thanks to the swivelling head, though the rear fabric strip on the main head tends to trap dust and pet hair. The rollers can also squeak slightly during movement, adding to the overall noise level.

Shark Evopower

While the vacuum includes LED indicators that change from green, yellow, to red depending on the amount of debris detected, the head lighting does not add much value. Unlike Dyson’s laser illumination that lights up the area directly in front of the cleaning head for users to notice any dirt, the Shark’s front light fails to make debris more visible, serving little to no purpose in darker areas or even under the furniture.

The Shark EvoPower System NEO+ Cordless Vacuum delivers strong suction performance and an excellent auto-cleaning dock system that adds genuine convenience. It is especially effective for homes with pets and long hair, where its Anti Hair Wrap technology keeps the brush free from tangles. However, its high noise level, underwhelming headlighting, and small dust compartment prevent it from reaching perfection. Despite these shortcomings, the EvoPower System NEO+ offers reliable power and smart cleaning features that make it a strong contender in the cordless vacuum category.

shark evopower neo

At S$699, the Shark EvoPower System NEO+ is an impressive addition to the home cleaning lineup for users who prioritise suction strength and automated convenience over noise.

Video game records are set through a myriad of ways, from sales, concurrent players, longest gameplay, high scores, largest collection, and so on, and Tencent’s Honor of Kings MOBA (multiplayer online battle arena) has just marked a new one, with a Guinness World Record for the largest attendance in a single esports match.

honor of kings

It’s truly a title fit for a king, considering that the decade-old game, which grossed US$2.6 million globally in 2024, was recently crowned the highest-grossing mobile game in the world as well.

The weekend of 8 November marked the Honor of Kings King Pro League (KPL) 2025 Grand Finals, held at Beijing’s iconic Bird’s Nest Stadium, which was transformed into a coliseum of lights and robust energy as 62,196 fans helped the game set a new Guinness World Record for the largest attendance in a single esports match. The crowd roared as two of China’s most celebrated singers, Zhou Shen (周深) and Han Hong (韩红), took the stage, with the latter performing the KPL 2025 theme song “神驰的属地” to the arena.

What a night! We witnessed the Honor of Kings KPL 2025 Grand Finals at the Beijing National Stadium (Bird’s Nest). A Guinness World Record was set, live performances lit up the arena, and AG reigned supreme! #HonorOfKings #KPL #Tencent #TiMi #Esports

Originally released in 2015, the TiMi Studio title started as a China-only title before the fantasy mobile game, which borrows heavily from Chinese history, mythology, and traditional culture, took off overseas under the title Honor of Kings, where it has been launched in several key markets, including North America and Brazil. And while MOBA games have faced perceptions of being less prestigious than their PC esports counterparts, the KPL Grand Finals are now making their mark on the global stage with this record. Every warm seat in the 80,000-seater event space is a testament to the cultural and competitive power of the game.

The best-of-seven showdown featured the two finalist teams – AG Super Play and Wolves – two of the most disciplined and skilled Honor of Kings teams in China. From the opening game, Wolves pressed aggressively, securing early kills and controlling the map. Meanwhile, AG struggled initially by falling behind in kills and territory, and having their base almost wiped out by their opponent, but ultimately, their resilience shone through. By the eighteenth minute of Game One, AG turned the tide around with an impressive display of skill and defence, capturing the crucial lord and clinching the first victory in a match that set the tone for the evening.

Games Two through Five were a rollercoaster of momentum as Wolves’ aggressive early game strategies repeatedly tested AG’s composure, while AG demonstrated calmness and strategic adaptability. Fans witnessed spectacular plays, ambushes, and nail-biting close calls.

In Game Six, the tension peaked as AG’s jungler Zhong Yi / Zoe (钟意), well-known for being the top jungler in Honor of Kings, selected his 100 per cent win-rate hero Augran (大司命), a choice reflecting confidence and trust in his own mastery, while Wolves countered with a similar strategy. Their roamer Yi Sheng / One (一 笙) picked DongHuang (东皇太一), also the players’ 100 per cent win-rate hero. Naturally, the crowd went wild over the selection of heroes, as one would have to lose their perfect hero win rate to the other at the end of the game.

Ultimately, AG emerged victorious in a 4–2 victory to claim the championship and the top prize of ¥20,000,000 (S$3,600,000), part of a ¥70,000,000 (S$12,800,000) prize pool, with YINUO (一诺) delivering an MVP-worthy performance to earn the FMVP (Finals’ Most Valuable Player) title.

Beyond the competition, we were provided a glimpse into the meticulous preparation behind one of these elite Honor of Kings teams. Players from JDG, such as NoFear and Rong, underwent rigorous professional training, with selection processes spanning multiple phases. Rituals and preparation range from something as simple as warming up hands to a more tedious reviewing and analysing opponent footage. In JDG’s Home City, a specially made training program is made for their players to test their reflex, speed, awareness, and memory, highlighting the discipline and precision required at the highest level.

JDG’s team manager emphasised the qualities they seek in players – expertise, willingness to learn, strong communication, and an unwavering desire to win. This trait can be seen in various players across different teams.

The scale and ambition of the Honor of Kings extend far beyond China. Deputy CEO and COO of the Esports World Cup Foundation, Mike McGabe, described the KPL as unique, both locally and globally, citing its diverse fandom. To them, it was incredibly important to include Honor of Kings in their list of games in EWC (Esports World Cup), and it was an easy decision, seeing how big this game is. Chief Games Officer Fabian Scheuermann noted that the growth and support for KPL clubs in China serve as a benchmark, which they hope international teams can strive for similar stability.

Tencent’s global esports vision continues to shape these milestones. Global Esports Senior Director James Yang stressed that Honor of Kings is not about exporting a copy of the KPL, but about sharing its DNA with teams worldwide. Partnerships, mentorship programs, and international competitions help close the gap between Chinese players and the global community.

Despite Malaysia being praised as the up-and-coming country with the most potential to beat a Chinese team by Yang, Team NOVA Esports Director Tsai “Rainer” Cheng-Bang highlighted the steep learning curve. The Malaysian market’s only advantage is that it plays 王者荣耀 (China’s version of Honor of Kings), which gives them a slight edge because of its advanced server with more features, content, and a more developed player base over regional competitors like the Philippines and Indonesia, who rely on the global version. Navigating the Chinese ranking system requires creating accounts under a Chinese IP address, a hurdle that underscores the challenge of bridging regional skill gaps.

That doesn’t stop Honor of Kings from constantly pouring in effort to diversify. This year’s Women’s Open tournament in Malaysia is a prime example, providing a platform for female competitors to showcase their skills and gain international exposure. Initiatives like this not only highlight the growing presence of women in esports but also signal the game’s commitment to cultivating talent across all demographics.

NOVA Esports Director Tsai “Rainer” Cheng-Bang

The KPL 2025 Grand Finals not only crowned AG as champions but also reaffirmed the magnitude of the impact mobile esports has made on a global scale. With a record-breaking attendance, the grand finals reinforced the message that Honor of Kings is a cultural phenomenon.

honor of kings

Ten years after it made its debut in China, Tencent’s epic MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) title, Honor of Kings, is now a gaming kingdom with no equal. What began as a local phenomenon has turned into a worldwide movement, as the game, from developer TiMi Studio, recently garnered 100 million monthly active users outside China in August 2025, and in just under two months, the fantasy game based heavily on Chinese history, mythology, and traditional culture, has now become the world’s most played mobile game.

honor of kings

In 2024, the game grossed US$2.6 million, making it the highest-grossing mobile game in the world at the time, and it wasn’t because of the larger Chinese population. Just this month, the company announced that the game surpassed 260 million global monthly active users (MAUs) across more than 200 countries and regions, with China hitting a record 139 million daily active users (DAUs), surpassing the previous record of 100 million DAUs set in 2024.

At the global Honor of Kings World Championship Grand Final or King Pro League (KPL) over the weekend, which sold out 60,000 seats in 12 seconds, Tencent announced that the event had reached a Guinness World Record of the largest attendance for an esports event – 62,196 attendees.

But this rise isn’t built on numbers alone. Behind the spectacle lies a clear mission – to build a global ecosystem where players, professionals, and communities can grow together, where the gap between international and Chinese players continues to close. Yes, there are cultural nuances in the game’s narrative that hamper the full enjoyment of non-Chinese players, which explains the stronger rollout of programs to win over more gamers from around the world.

The game comes in 2 versions – the Chinese Version, 王者荣耀, which is limited to mainland China and a few select markets, and the global version, Honor of Kings, now available in more than 160 countries across Asia, Europe, America, the Middle East, and North Africa.

“We are not trying to copy the KPL to the world. We are sharing our Honor of Kings DNA and hope that it can be inherited,” explains Tencent’s Global Esports Senior Director James Yang,

Honor of Kings
Tencent’s Global Esports Senior Director James Yang

Through initiatives like the Global Esports Power Up Program, teams around the world receive structured training and mentorship directly from China’s top-tier ecosystem and coaches.

According to the Head of KPL Cheng Huang, the aim is to “strengthen communication channels across the world with China” by fostering an open environment where teams can learn, adapt to game mechanics, and ultimately rise to the same standard of play as the Chinese.

And the success is showing, as players from countries such as Malaysia have emerged as rising powerhouses, challenging long-held expectations of China’s dominance. For Tencent, that’s a success story in itself.

“We want to see a global team beat us,” Cheng Huang shares. “When that happens, it means we are doing something right.”

Honor of Kings
Head of KPL Cheng Huang

While the competitive scene grows, the cultural heartbeat of Honor of Kings remains just as crucial. Known for its heroes inspired by Chinese mythology and folklore, the game’s expansion required more than just language translation but cultural reimagination and adjusting to an international audience.

Honor of Kings Game Producer Dean Huang explained that the goal was to always ensure that each hero “resonates and feels familiar to the rest of the world” while preserving the heart of its original story. This philosophy has led to regionally inspired heroes like Indonesia’s Garuda Khageswara and Brazil’s Luara, designed with local aesthetics that align with each country’s identity. Think of how global games infuse their pool of characters with those from different nationalities and cultures – Tencent and TiMi Studio follows the established practice made by countless developers before them, but also understands that this balance between authenticity and adaptation defines Honor of Kings’ global charm, where it’s still deeply Chinese at its core, but speaks in the language of every culture it touches.

To sustain this global movement, Tencent has invested US$15 million into developing the game’s international esports infrastructure. From professional leagues to grassroots programs, there are now seven regional professional leagues across the globe, led by the KPL in in China, followed by the MY Honor of Kings League in in Malaysia, Indonesia’s Kings Laga, Philippine’s Kings League, the Major East League (Japan, Korea, MENA and South Asia), the Major West League (America and Europe), and Brazil’s Honor of Kings League, all of which are complemented by initiatives like the Open Series and Campus Series, which provides new players a chance to learn directly from professionals.

KPL Grand Finals 2025 opening ceremony

Already, the effort looks to be paying off, as feedback from the grassroots community has been overwhelmingly positive, with players praising the mentorship programs and accessibility. Even the AI companion coach, which uses large language models to help players analyse their performance, has been met with enthusiasm.

“This is only the beginning,” promises Honor of Kings KPL Operations and Development Lead Jiaxin, who reveals the system will continue to evolve and refine how players train. For established pro players, competition is also becoming more exciting, though the team recognises that with the long headstart that Chinese teams have, it’s unlikely that international teams have the capabilities to offer much of a challenge… for now, that is.

“We do hope that every country will have the opportunity to beat us,” Jiaxin commented. “If a strong team defeats China’s pros, we want others to learn from them.”

KPL Operations and Development Lead Jiaxin

There’s also the potential of the various professional leagues to become more than just events for like-minded players from the community to gather as in China, the KPL has evolved from a tournament to a celebration, as each KPL Grand Final transforms into a carnival for the growing fandom, with board games, music, comics, and crafts creating a festival-like experience that goes beyond the mobile screen.

This celebratory spirit has now reached the global stage with the Esports World Cup (EWC), where Honor of Kings made its debut as one of the core titles in 2025. Deputy CEO and Chief Operating Officer of the Esports World Cup Foundation, Mike McCabe, says it was “an incredibly easy decision” to include the game.

“The KPL is truly unique, not just locally but globally. It’s on a different scale, one that is very diverse from an audience standpoint. When we look at it, we look at the fandom that inspired us to create the Superfans Program and work in partnership with clubs. The KPL clubs are on a different level.”

Chief Games Officer Fabian Scheuermann echoes the sentiment, pointing to the massive influence of the KPL. “We looked at the sheer size of its fanbase. The support and growth of the clubs globally is incredible, and we’re hoping that international teams will also achieve the same stability and growth as the ones in China.”

Chief Games Officer Fabian Scheuermann (left), Deputy CEO and COO of the Esports World Cup Foundation Mike McCabe (middle), Tencent’s Global Esports Senior Director James Yang (right)

The partnership has already shown tangible results in Saudi Arabia, where the EWC introduced a new market and gave fans the opportunity to witness KPL’s best players live. “We saw a 20 to 25 per cent increase in attendance numbers, with over 460,000 visits on site,” says Fabian. “We wanted people to experience the impact and scale that Honor of Kings brings.”

For Tencent, EWC isn’t just another tournament. It’s a platform to share knowledge and raise standards worldwide. McCabe shared that the team has taken great inspiration from China’s approach to esports production, from ceremonial design to player welfare. “We look at China’s player lounges, their resilience in technology and broadcast, and even their metrics. All of which have inspired us. It’s not competition, it’s appreciation.”

Honor of Kings team AG Super Play

Inclusivity remains another pillar of growth. James Yang notes that the Honor of King’s women’s tournament in Malaysia is just the beginning, with the team “working on the ecosystem first” to ensure long-term sustainability. Fabian also emphasises that the team is “supporting ecosystems where women are already present and creating more opportunities for them to compete on the big stage.” With plans to expand the Women’s Open and ensure aspiring female players receive equal opportunities, Honor of Kings is championing diversity on every level.

The pro players, too, are treated like professional athletes. Top-tier clubs such as JDG, Wolves, AG, Weibo, Hero Esports, and LGD train in dedicated Home City Venues equipped with gyms, wellness spaces, and recovery rooms. The focus on mental and physical support reflects Tencent’s commitment to nurturing its players as competitors and individuals.

KPL Grand Finals 2025 at Beijing’s Bird’s Nest Stadium

As Honor of Kings enters its next chapter, the momentum shows no sign of slowing down. The KPL will mark its 10th anniversary in 2026, celebrating a decade of growth at Beijing’s iconic Bird’s Nest Stadium, a fitting stage for a game that has redefined mobile esports. It will also return to the Esports World Cup 2026 and the Asian Games 2026, cementing its place in the global competitive landscape.

Dyson PencilVac Fluffycones Cordless Vacuum – Review https://geekculture.co/dyson-pencilvac-fluffycones-cordless-vacuum-review/ Thu, 31 Jul 2025 04:59:49 +0000 https://geekculture.co/?p=321490

Ideal for smaller homes with tight corners.

The post Dyson PencilVac Fluffycones Cordless Vacuum – Review appeared first on Geek Culture.

]]>

Vacuuming isn’t the most thrilling chore in the world, but Dyson seems to think there are ways to improve on the experience, and they certainly have results to show for it, as the British household appliance brand has sorted its vast selection of vacuum cleaners into various sub-models, with each catering to different and specific needs.

The Dyson PencilVac Fluffycones is the brand’s latest, and possibly sleekest, cleaning gadget to date. Touted as the world’s slimmest cordless stick vacuum, it’s basically a long, extended stick, measuring 38mm in diameter and weighing only 1.8kg (or 800g in handheld mode), with a vacuum head at the end that offers a solution for compact spaces. It feels as slender and lightweight as advertised, is incredibly easy to manoeuvre, glides smoothly across hard floors, and fits under furniture with just 9.5cm (95mm) of clearance, making it ideal for those hard-to-reach spots where crumbs and dust like to hide.

But don’t mistake its size for weakness. This tiny tube of tech is equipped with Dyson’s Hyperdymium motor, spinning at up to 140,000rpm to deliver 55 air watts of suction. For everyday cleaning, it packs more than enough power to handle dust, dirt, and even stubborn strands of hair.

Speaking of hair, that’s where the PencilVac’s new Fluffycones cleaner head comes in. Now with illumination on both front and back, the head features four cone-shaped rollers that spin in alternating directions to prevent hair from getting tangled. If hair is trapped, the rollers cleverly bunch it up and eject it out to the side, so you can just vacuum it back in. It’s a neat solution that works like a charm, albeit with a small trade-off.

Dyson PencilVac Fluffycones Cordless Vacuum Review

Due to its cone-like roller design, the cleaner head isn’t shaped like a traditional flat-edge vacuum, so it doesn’t sit flush the way the latter would when cleaning along flat walls or corners.

There’s a small gap that leaves behind a thin strip of dust, which can only be cleared if the vacuum is angled sideways against the wall. While not a dealbreaker, it can be slightly frustrating to swivel it around just to get into corners. Additionally, running the vacuum over loose wires can cause them to become trapped in the rollers, and it occurred twice during testing, with one instance even cutting off the lights, so users should be mindful and keep cables out of the way.

The PencilVac’s trash bin is a compact 0.08 litres, but with Dyson’s air-compressing dust-separation system, it can hold up to five times more than its size suggests. As debris streams in, the airflow compresses the dirt, compacting it neatly such that you get much more room than expected. Dyson also added a “syringe”-style ejection mechanism that plunges deep into the bin in one swift motion, which means no dust clouds and poking around with your fingers.

Dyson PencilVac Fluffycones Cordless Vacuum Review (2)

Battery-wise, the Dyson PencilVac offers up to an approximate 30 minutes of runtime on Eco mode after a full charge, and 10 minutes on Boost. Clearly, this is more of a portable handheld for short bursts of use and is not designed for deep cleaning large spaces, but for smaller homes and apartments.

During a test in a 1033 square-foot five-room apartment, the PencilVac vacuumed the entire space on Eco mode with 30 per cent battery left, leaving behind a runtime of 7 minutes and 50 seconds. A helpful on-screen indicator displays the estimated time left each time the vacuum is turned on, proving especially useful when planning your cleaning sessions. But for those living in larger, multi-storey landed properties, expect to recharge midway.

Dyson PencilVac Fluffycones Cordless Vacuum Review (3)

Those who need a time extension can also swap out the battery for more juice, except that additional battery packs have to be bought separately. No further details about the battery pack, such as pricing details and local availability, are currently available for the Singapore market.

Things unfortunately start to wobble (literally) with the charging base. While the PencilVac itself feels premium and well-built, the dock doesn’t quite match up. It uses magnetic charging, but the lightweight build reduces stability, making the vacuum stick toppling over a real risk, especially when users are in a rush to dock the vacuum. Most of its weight sits at the top, and with the dock charging from the bottom, the whole setup ends up feeling off-kilter and slightly precarious.

Putting the PencilVac back in place needs to be done carefully and in an upright position, so only walk off after a click is heard, which indicates that the vacuum has been securely attached. The separate accessory holder, which attaches behind the charging dock for the additional cleaner tools, also sits in place loosely, and slight bumps will knock it off, so perhaps longer nubs could have been used for a stronger hold.

Dyson PencilVac Fluffycones Cordless Vacuum Review (4)

On the accessories front, the PencilVac includes a rotating combi-crevice tool with soft bristles and a hair screw tool, both of which prove handy to the cleaning process. The former offers a nice touch for cleaning higher corners or navigating tight angles, as its head can swivel and bend, while the hair screw tool – a staple in the Dyson vacuum series – is ideal for use on mattresses, carpets, and sofas.

Additionally, the PencilVac is the first Dyson cordless vacuum cleaner that allows users to connect to the MyDyson app, allowing users to check on their filter’s status and battery information or consult the manual, if the occasion arises.

At S$899, the Dyson PencilVac is a premium buy, but that’s always been the case with Dyson products. Here, what you’re paying for is a combination of clever engineering, smart design, and a form factor that changes how and where you can vacuum. It likely won’t replace your main vacuum for larger spaces, but for those seeking a stylish, space-saving, and zero-fuss alternative, the vacuum is a solid pick.

Secretlab Ergonomic Recliner Add-On – Review https://geekculture.co/secretlab-ergonomic-recliner-add-on-review/ Tue, 22 Oct 2024 15:00:00 +0000 https://geekculture.co/?p=304823

A worthwhile, space-saving investment that offers comfort for extended sitting.

The post Secretlab Ergonomic Recliner Add-On – Review appeared first on Geek Culture.

]]>

Secretlab has built a reputation for delivering exceptional ergonomic comfort with its gaming chair range. While the concept remains similar, the Singapore company wants to push the boundaries of ergonomic design with the introduction of an add-on — the Secretlab Ergonomic Recliner Add-On

Secretlab Ergonomic Recliner Add-On Review

Priced at S$239 / US$199, it is a resting extension for your feet designed to attach to your existing Secretlab chair, transforming your chair into a full-fledged recliner à la a La-Z-Boy.

Think of this add-on as a rectangle bed measuring 230 x 430mm that sits under the seat of a compatible Secretlab TITAN Evo or Classic Series chair, and pops forward at the pull of a lever. This five-minute installation transforms the chair into a fully adjustable recliner, offering manual adjustments to its position. At zero degrees, the recliner is tucked under and perpendicular to the chair, allowing for a compact seating position, and rises up to 80 degrees. You can adjust this recliner independently from the chair, choosing to lift it to prop your feet, without the need to push back on the seat recline itself.

The Ergonomic Recliner Add-On features its PlushCell Memory Foam cushions and supports up to 30kg, providing ample leg room space and comfort, no matter your body size.

The cushioning and design alleviate pressure on your legs, helping to reduce strain on the thighs and lower back. While there’s no way to personally verify the improvement in blood circulation without undergoing specific tests, the recliner does provide noticeable comfort during extended use. The multiple adjustable positions allow for better customisation to suit individual preferences, helping to reduce fatigue and feel more rejuvenated after long periods of sitting.

Setting up the recliner is quick and easy, taking very little time. It can be done in under five minutes with no tools required. Simply lay the chair on its back on the provided foam sheet, then remove the seat height and backrest lock levers. Attach the rubber clips to the seat base, secure the recliner over them, and lock the mounting hooks. After removing the safety Velcro straps, reattach all the levers, including the one for recliner adjustment and you’re ready to go.

While installation may be as simple as it sounds, smaller individuals may need assistance with laying the chair on its side due to its weight upon installation.

Using the recliner is as straightforward as it gets. To raise it, just pull the lever up while using your legs to control how far it goes, as this is spring loaded and you use your legs to offer resistance and control its position. Without your legs to guide it, the recliner will extend quickly but not abruptly, so keeping a bit of pressure helps stop it at your preferred angle. However, pushing the recliner back down requires quite a bit of force, which can be challenging for petite users. Sitting closer to the edge of the chair provides a better angle to push it down more effectively using your legs. When not in use, the recliner can be tucked neatly beneath the chair’s base, preserving the chair’s sleek look.

iPad mini (2024) — Review https://geekculture.co/ipad-mini-2024-review/ Tue, 22 Oct 2024 13:00:00 +0000 https://geekculture.co/?p=304847

An excellent choice for creators and those seeking a portable, long-lasting device.

]]>

Sometimes, you’re just stuck between a MacBook and an iPad. Both are powerful devices with common purposes, though one offers more convenience and portability over the other’s processing capabilities. But both are not the cheapest Apple devices to own, and that’s where the iPad mini (2024) comes in.

Apple iPad mini 2024 Review

At 8.3-inch, it’s significantly smaller than a 13-inch MacBook Air or 10.9-inch iPad, but easier to hold with one hand. It’s also a great device to carry around, offering more real estate compared to a 6.9-inch iPhone 16 Pro Max, though at the current way the American tech giant has been rolling out new devices, it raises the question of whether it truly upgrades its 2021 predecessor, or if you’re better off with a regular iPad.

The main appeal of the iPad mini remains the same — it’s a smaller device that works well in meetings and classrooms, as Apple’s petite offering continues to gain traction and maintain a strong presence in the market. Known for its compact form factor and robust performance, the iPad mini has consistently proven itself as a unique hardware offering, instead of being the smaller version of the coveted iPad. Following a brief hiatus after its 2021 release, during which no new models were introduced, the iPad mini makes a compelling comeback in 2024. With a blend of familiar aesthetics, enhanced performance, and long-awaited features, the latest iteration may not completely redefine expectations, but enhances what users love and infuses it with new power and efficiency.

At the heart of the iPad mini (2024) is its stunning 8.3-inch Liquid Retina display, offering a physical advantage that’s not too big or small, and the right size to have it everywhere you go, for a ride on the bus, train or even in your hand carry when flying. The screen resolution remains at 2266 by 1488, at 326 ppi (pixel per inch), providing the sharp details and text, as well as the vivid colours that Apple devices are known for. It retains key features such as a True Tone screen, P3 wide colour which offers richer and more saturated colours, an anti-reflective coating, and a fingerprint-resistant oleophobic layer on the rear panel.

While some of these features continue to contribute to a vibrant viewing experience, others feel rather old, including the 60Hz refresh rate that feels woefully outdated in 2024. Fans may be disappointed that Apple hasn’t upgraded this particular aspect, as a higher refresh rate would greatly improve the overall experience, particularly for gaming and media consumption; however, it’s important to note that the iPad mini isn’t the best the company has to offer. It’s typically geared more toward tasks such as note-taking, reading and drawing, alongside some light productivity, prioritising general basic functions over technological superiority. It also explains why refresh rate isn’t that crucial to audiences who are only looking at entry-level features, and not for a device focused on high-performance gaming or media. Additionally, user concerns about jelly scrolling have been addressed and resolved by Apple.

The iPad mini (2024) takes a significant leap in performance thanks to the powerful A17 Pro chip, moving beyond the A15 Bionic found in its predecessor. Apple claims the 6-core CPU is now up to 30 percent faster, while the 5-core GPU delivers up to 25 percent faster performance, complete with impressive features like hardware-accelerated ray tracing. Putting the tablet through its paces in Genshin Impact yielded a consistently smooth performance at 60 frames per second (FPS), with enhanced thermal management capabilities proving highly efficient at dissipating heat to prevent overheating even during extended gaming sessions.

What really stands out, though, is the increase in RAM from 4GB to 8GB. This boost in memory not only enhances multitasking but also makes a noticeable difference when working with creative apps like Lightroom, or even video editing software like Premiere Pro. You’ll find that tasks flow more effortlessly.

In terms of design, both the 2024 and 2021 models maintain a lightweight and compact form factor, making them easy to carry on the move. However, while the new version introduces four attractive colours: Starlight, Space Gray, Purple, and the new Blue, the Pink option from the 2021 range has sadly been removed. Notably, the shade of Purple here is lighter, adding a fresh twist to the colour palette. Despite these new colours, the overall design remains largely unchanged, including the dimensions, weight, and button placements, which may leave some users wishing for more innovation.

A notable upgrade over its predecessor is stylus compatibility on the 2024 iPad mini, which supports both the original Apple Pencil and the new Apple Pencil Pro. The latest stylus enhances the creative experience with features like improved precision, low latency, and effective palm rejection that prevents accidental touches on the screen, making it ideal for artists and creators. Its innovative functions, including squeeze commands, barrel roll actions, haptic feedback, and Find My support, provide added convenience and customisation, positioning the iPad mini as a powerful tool for maximising creativity.

The upcoming release of iPadOS 18.1, scheduled for 28 October, brings a suite of new features under Apple Intelligence. Notable additions include enhanced notification summaries, a Photos app cleanup tool to remove unwanted objects from your photos, and a redesigned Siri interface. One standout improvement is the ability to interact with your screen even while Siri is active, making multitasking smoother. However, the Photos app’s cleanup tool still feels underdeveloped in its current beta state, with room for improvement before the full release.

The introduction of AI-powered writing tools for apps like Notes and Pages also brings added convenience for editing tasks and enhancing productivity, representing a shift toward an overreliance on technology for content creation. This update highlights Apple’s commitment to incorporating advanced AI features, though its impact on user habits and content creation processes remains to be seen.

As for connectivity, the new USB-C port now boosts data transfer speeds from 5 Gbps to 10 Gbps and ensures faster data transfers and greater compatibility with other devices. The 2024 iPad mini supports Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3, aligning it with the latest wireless standards for improved performance.

The pricing for the 2024 iPad mini remains competitive, starting at S$699 for the base model with 128GB of storage, an increase from the 64GB offered in the previous model. Additionally, a new 512GB option is now available for power users. However, the price climbs significantly with higher storage, topping out at S$1,799 with the inclusion of other accessories like Apple Pencil Pro, WiFi and Cellular, Smart Folio and Apple Care, making the price bump feel steep.

In summary, the 2024 iPad mini stands out as an excellent choice for creators and those seeking a portable device with impressive battery life. With its compact size, powerful performance, and enhanced features, the device is an attractive option for creatives. Users can expect similar long-lasting battery life, augmented by the efficiency of the new chip and low power mode for extended usage.

Geek Review: Apple Watch Series 9 https://geekculture.co/apple-watch-series-9-review/ Wed, 25 Oct 2023 04:46:03 +0000 https://geekculture.co/?p=276622

The Apple Watch Series 9 does well to build on it's predecessor's success.

The days of a watch merely telling time is a thing of the past, as smartwatches have taken over, allowing owners to take calls, track activities, go diving, and even track your heartbeats and, for females, their period. Nothing comes close to what Apple has done for the product category, and the Watch 9 continues the trend of incremental upgrades that consistently keep the range the best smartwatch that you can get. The release of a new Apple Watch always generates anticipation among tech enthusiasts, and the latest Series 9 is no exception, offering gesture controls that continue to simplify the interface we have with devices.

Apple Watch Series 9

The Series 9 maintains Apple’s premium pricing strategy that starts from S$599 for the aluminum 41mm GPS model, to S$649 for the 45mm GPS model, and S$749 for the cellular version. The stainless steel comes in at S$1,049, which includes both GPS and cellular. Although it’s a significant investment, Apple’s dedication to quality and functionality is often well worth the cost for loyal Apple consumers.

Visually, the Series 9 maintains the iconic rectangular design of its predecessor, but with every version, the bezel shrinks, providing slightly more screen real estate, even as the screen gets brighter. This year’s model features an improved Always-On Retina Display, offering a remarkable brightness of 2000 nits. This level of brightness was previously only seen in the Ultra model from the previous year and the enhanced display ensures visibility even when you’re outdoors in bright sunlight, making it much more convenient to check the time and notifications.

It also comes in a bright and playful pink colour that is surprisingly muted in aesthetics, even when you’re constantly reminded that you have a Barbie-esque pink timepiece on your wrist. And to stick with its sustainability goals, Apple has dropped leather straps as they welcome a more eco-friendly approach with the rubber, textile, and stainless steel straps.

The Apple Watch Series 9 boasts an improved suite of health sensors, offering better accuracy and versatility for tracking various metrics. It’s particularly notable for its ECG capabilities and blood oxygen monitoring, which have become increasingly important for users concerned about their well-being. They’ve also added low-cardio notifications for when your cardio fitness levels are low according to your age and sex.

Apple Watch Series 9

The new S9 SiP chip is a substantial leap forward from the Series 8’s S8 chip, which bore similarities to the S6 and S7. The S9 chip boasts 5.6 billion transistors, and the CPU gains an impressive 60% speed increase, while graphics see a substantial 30 percent enhancement. What does it mean for you though? Well, for one thing, Siri performs better. The digital assistant works smoothly on the iPhone and iPad, but the reason it takes a slightly longer time to deliver the requested information is because the data is not processed directly on the watch, but sent to the cloud before it’s relayed back to the watch. This processor boost results in faster Siri response, as certain information can be managed on the device itself, more efficient app launches, and an overall smoother user experience, eliminating the need for cloud reliance and ensuring accurate interactions.

Apple Watch Series 9

The biggest change in performance is with the new ‘double tap’ gesture. If you’ve used any smartwatch before, you know that the interface, of tapping the screen to activate or register an action, is the norm, but now, there is a more versatile way. Are you busy with cooking and can’t pick up the call, or driving and don’t want to be distracted by tapping on your watch to answer a call? Simply tap your index finger and thumb twice with the hand that the Watch 9 is on, and you can answer the call. Or reply to a message with a voice recording simply by double-tapping your fingers.

Want to silence your alarm in the morning, play or pause music, or end a timer without touching your screen say, with your flour and grease-coated fingers while you’re baking or cooking? Double tap is the answer. It’s incredibly intuitive, and we’ve even tried it by pinching our thumb and middle finger, and it works just as well. Apple says this handy action is because of the new processor and while it seems peculiar to buy a new watch or upgrade it just for this one feature, the offering is simply an exciting and versatile addition to the user experience that you know will evolve and change the way users interact with smartwatches, as it further streamlines navigation and interaction while you’re preoccupied with different tasks at hand.

Apple Watch Series 9

Apple claims improved battery life for the Series 9, which we tested with a 45-minute spin class, a full day of walking, and constant notifications and messages. The results showed significant improvement over the Watch 8, catering to users who prefer less frequent charging.

Now, let’s consider the value proposition by comparing the Series 9 to the Apple Watch SE 2. The SE 2, released at a lower starting price of S$379, offers an affordable entry point to the Apple Watch ecosystem, as it comes with the essential features that most users need, including fitness tracking, notifications, and a stylish design.

Apple Watch Series 9

While the Series 9 offers notable improvements in health monitoring, performance, and display, the Apple Watch SE remains a strong contender. For those who don’t require such advanced health features, the SE provides an excellent smartwatch experience at a significantly lower price point. If budget considerations are a primary concern, the SE is definitely a compelling option.

However, for users who demand the latest and best in health monitoring, faster performance, and a brighter screen, the Series 9 justifies the investment. The ECG capabilities, blood oxygen monitoring, and enhanced processing power are beneficial for those who prioritise their health and rely on their watch for more demanding tasks.

And if your hands are always full and you’ve missed enough calls because of it, double tap on the Watch 9 will change the way you interact with technology.

A worthy upgrade!

Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 3 Earbuds review

The pressure is always on brands to constantly improve their offerings and introduce new ones, but for those with a proven and steady track record, this expectation to deliver is doubled. Sennheiser, the proud owner to a host of high-performing audio products, is no stranger to the challenge, and again demonstrates its prowess with the highly-anticipated Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 3 (MTW3) earbuds.

Standing at S$399, the MTW3 has undergone an extensive upgrade from the previous Momentum True Wireless 2. It debuted on selected markets in May before finally making its way to Singapore, and it’s astonishing how Sennheiser managed to tailor all of these enhancements into a smaller pair of earbuds, while still retaining the same battery life.

With not much difference from the previous model, the MTW3 keeps its aesthetics with the lovely premium fabric around the case, and now comes in three different colours: White, Black, and Graphite. The case’s USB-C charging port has been re-positioned to the front and upgraded to support wireless charging, with a lighting indicator informing users of its charging status: pulsing orange for in-progress charging and static green for a full charge. Despite its scaled-down size, the case may not be the most suitable when fitting into smaller pockets as they are still slightly bulky.

The MTW3 earbuds are substantially smaller, with more rounded edges to give them the illusion of being smaller than they are. Stripped off the shiny surface of its predecessor, the earpiece cuts a more modern-looking and subtle appearance. The ergonomic design of the earbuds sits very comfortably in your ears and you can customise the fit with the four different-sized silicone ear tips included in the package. A foam piece now sits inside the silicone ear tips, which helps block ambient noise more efficiently, but also traps dirt, so regular cleaning and maintenance are required.

An optional accessory has been included as well. The MTW3 can be paired with rubber ear fins that wedge on the ear concha to offer extra hold and stability, especially during vigorous exercise. These come in a sophisticated design and will be available in three different sizes. Lighting indicators sit on the inside of the earbuds with red showing that both earbuds have been disconnected, blinking red and blue in pairing mode, static blue highlighting that your earbuds have been connected, and blinking red at low battery.

When put to the test, the earbuds didn’t disappoint with their sound design and performance. The MTW3 re-established Sennheiser’s standing as one of the best in the industry, impressing with the depth of instrument separation, clarity and detail in songs that have more complexity and instruments such as progressive metal veterans Dream Theater’s “Pull Me Under” and four-time Grammy award winner Silk Sonic’s “Smokin Out The Window”.

Armed with responsive drivers, the earbuds boast a very good natural balance without adjusting the customisable EQ, resulting in lively-sounding audio and a heavy emphasis on background detail and sound staging, which makes instruments shine brightly. The bass isn’t as strong but still delivers, though there’s some upper bass bloat that bleeds into the mids. There’s also a slight de-emphasis on the treble frequencies, causing a lack of vibrancy in the mids, especially on vocals. Essentially, these earbuds might not be the best purchase for those who enjoy massive bass distortion – even if the AptX Adaptive codec offers the bonus feature of high-definition streaming and lower latency.

In fact, the latency on the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 3 Earbuds was barely noticeable when watching Youtube, Netflix or Instagram videos. We also tested these earbuds on games such as Marvel Super War and Critical Ops: Online PvP FPS, proving that they are more than capable of running and playing games with very minimal lag time.

Modified from Active to Adaptive Noise Cancelling (ANC), the ANC mode on the MTW3 is considerably better than the MTW2. The earbuds are adaptive and will listen to your surroundings to filter out unwanted noise accordingly, with more power used to cancel out noisier environments. Instead of two mics, the earbuds now use four (out of six) mics to actively monitor ambient noise levels. To trigger ANC, users will have to tap the left earbud three times: a double ascending beep signifies ANC mode is on, while a double descending beep shows that it’s been turned off. It can filter out unwanted background noise and focus solely on the user’s voice in less than five seconds, and is pleasant on the ears, with none of the pressure felt from the sound waves produced to eliminate unwanted ambient noise.

The transparency mode can be activated with a touch on the left earbud, a feature that can come in handy when you have to hear the surroundings. While the attempt is commendable, a hissing sound will appear upon activation, making it feel and sound like passthrough audio. An anti-wind mode, which helps to reduce wind noise as per the name, has been added to the list as well.

The MTW3 has also been remodelled to include mono mode, allowing users to play any one earbud at a time – a feature that the MTW2 lacked. Touchpads are now more responsive compared to the previous MTW2, with the auto-pause and auto-play functionality bringing more convenience when removing from or putting the earbuds in the ear. Users have the option to switch this mode off in their Smart Control application, which lets them customise touch controls and other settings. The MTW3 are rated IPX4, making it water-resistant and great for exercising.

On the note of Smart Control, the application has undergone a huge redesign and now includes more features. The newly-added Sound Zones, for instance, allow the GPS to detect a user’s location and customise their earbud’s sound settings for the gym, home, or office. These presets are then saved and automatically changed according to their location at a 100-metre radius. The equaliser is now more intuitive with the bass booster and podcast mode, with the sound check feature helping to configure the best EQ for users by testing their hearing and frequencies. The Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 3 Earbuds cannot connect to multiple devices simultaneously, but the app may be used to switch between different platforms.

Without ANC mode turned on, the MTW3 earbuds allow for seven hours of playtime peruse and an extra 21 hours with the charging case, making it a total of 28 hours. Turn it off, and the MTW3 earbuds can last up to 5.5 hours on a single charge and offer an hour of runtime with a simple 10-minute charge.

Overall, this pair of buds is commendable and extremely comfortable to use on a daily basis. Along with so many added upgrades and functions, the ability for users to customise these earbuds certainly counts towards a more enhanced listening experience, which is always a welcome bonus. Look no further if you are looking for a pair of earbuds that boasts a great audio mix, for the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 3 Earbuds delivers it all.

Geek Review: ASUS ROG Cetra True Wireless Earbuds https://geekculture.co/geek-review-asus-rog-cetra-true-wireless-earbuds/ Sun, 29 May 2022 17:52:00 +0000 https://geekculture.co/?p=231802 ROG Cetra True Wireless

Gaming wireless earbuds are now a thing with ROG's refreshed Cetra earbuds.

The post Geek Review: ASUS ROG Cetra True Wireless Earbuds appeared first on Geek Culture.

]]>
ROG Cetra True Wireless

ASUS can always be depended on to deliver high-quality products and PC-building parts, and  its audio offerings are no slouch either. Having released multiple lines of both wired and wireless headphones, the Taiwanese tech giant has more than enough expertise to fall back on, and it shows – for the most part. Alas, the ASUS ROG Cetra True Wireless doesn’t quite make the cut for what it offers at a heftier price tag.

Adapted from the existing ROG Cetra, the gaming-centric headphones boast some modifications to its form. The earbuds now have higher impedance, using less battery power to save you time on charging. They have also lowered mic sensitivity from -40 ± 3dB to -38dB to reduce more background noise while increasing its response to 100Hz – 10KHz. Gone are the ROG RGB lighting on the earbuds, the ear fins, and foam tips that the original ROG Cetra had.

Right out of the box, the charging case for the Cetra True Wireless comes in a sleek black case with a matte finish that makes fingerprints non-visible. It fits effortlessly into pockets and comes with a light indicator showing the casing’s battery life and a USB-C charging port at the rear. Upon opening, ROG’s logo sits in the center with RGB lighting sandwiched between the wireless headphones. Unfortunately, the RGB is not customisable, and colors rotate in an infinite cycle. Do note that while the earbuds are water-resistant, the case is not.

The help of the extended grip from the earbuds makes removal and storing fuss-free. You will not have to worry about losing your earbuds from the casing, too, as magnets secure them. These earbuds are rated IPX4, making them resistant to water but not dust. You can go for a nice jog when it drizzles, but make sure to change the silicone ear tips included in the package for a better fit. While the earbuds do not fall out easily, they do not reach deep enough into the ear canal even with two additional ear tips, making it more susceptible to external noise.

ROG Cetra True Wireless

Hence, we recommend testing it out before purchasing. Lighting indicators are also situated on both earbuds with red showing that both earbuds have been disconnected, blinking blue activating pairing mode on the left earbud, and static blue highlight connection on both sides. If you’re hoping for RGB on these actual earbuds you’re out of luck.

These earbuds are easy to pair and compatible on various devices. They also function without turning off, should you choose to use just one side of the earbuds at any time. You can also rely on these earbuds to reconnect automatically to your device after removing it from its casing for future use, and disconnect by putting them back in place.

Users are given the option to install their software app, Amoury Crate, which is available to you via the QR code printed in the user document. The app allows you to control the volume, which in our opinion is rather unnecessary, customise your earbud’s EQ, have the option to change into gaming mode, and know your earbud’s battery percentage. Included under the sound optimisation category are a few EQ presets for you to choose from. Should you want to explore further, a “customise” option is available to you. Now, there isn’t anything unique that stood out in the app, and the secondary on/off button on the equaliser can be rather confusing, as it expands into more presets that could have just been compiled under the same category for greater ease of use. And to those wondering if it’s a double EQ combination – no, it still follows individual presets.

We’ve tested out the latency of these earbuds by playing Mobile Legends: Bang Bang and Apex Legends Mobile on mobile, and Valorant on PC, watched a couple of Youtube and Netflix shows, and typed in notes. To our surprise, the lag time was evident without activating gaming mode. Gunshots and footsteps, while noticeable, were heard only a few milliseconds later. We wouldn’t want this to compromise our reaction time and make gameplay less enjoyable. Fortunately enough, turning on gaming mode can fix latency which helps to keep audio in sync, so you can keep up with the action happening on-screen and react accordingly.

Like most earbuds in the market, these babies also offer gesture controls, and the feature is pretty straightforward here and can handle different commands. Gestures are controlled by various tap and tap-and-hold sequences, which then activate up to four different kinds of ANC modes, voice assistance, pairing mode, and power off on the left earbud. The right earbud, meanwhile, is capable of media playback, gaming and pairing mode, picking up phone calls, and turning the power off. There are many gestures to remember and thankfully, there is a user guide to refer to when in doubt. Alas, volume cannot be controlled via the earbuds if you require that function.

The earbuds’ 10mm drivers deliver some decent treble and bass when it comes to gaming, making it suitable for those who appreciate audible footsteps and gunshots. However, what didn’t make the experience decent was the drastic drop in quality in audio when playing games with friends on Discord. It is known that Bluetooth doesn’t work too well with Discord, and it’s a problem that plagues other Bluetooth headsets as well, especially when there are two audio sources (e.g. in-game audio and voice chat from Discord) playing at the same time. While we cannot fault Asus for this, the fact that this has the ROG branding means there are expectations for a gamer-centric earbuds, so it’s telling when such a common issue continues to be present here.

One of the primary uses of earbuds is music on the go. Although the earbuds work well with games, what could have been an all-in-one device becomes an impossibility where music is concerned. When put to the test with four Grammy award-winning band Snarky Puppy – Shofukan, what was supposed to be a calm yet groovy piece became very harsh on the ears, with the guitars, keyboards, and wind instruments creating discordant mids. Instruments drowned one another out and sounded like sandpaper. Lows were somewhat impactful on heavier songs like Periphery – Marigold, but the overload of mids made them  sound very muffled and unpleasant to listen to. Audio also becomes distorted when bass and sub-bass are boosted.

The earbuds’ ANC was not quite as remarkable despite there being four different modes. They do phase out humming noise from fans and frequencies below 100dB in heavy mode, but noise is still penetrable unless you turn your volume up. Note that if your ears are sensitive, using these earbuds’ ANC can be a little uncomfortable due to the pressure of the sound waves, where  you might hear an occasional high-pitched frequency ringing.

When gaming, a trusty mic is a must; call-outs are essential, and we want to be heard. It is clear that the earbuds managed to eliminate background noises and isolate voices. However, there is a slight clipping of the voice, causing it to be a little muffled and unclear at times.

ROG Cetra True Wireless

What is impressive is the battery life but make no mistake – these do not last up to 27 hours in one charge as advertised. Not directly. Instead, the case provides your earbuds up to 27 hours of charge/use time. It took about five plus hours of use before the batteries were drained,  with ANC off. With ANC on, the earbuds lasted 4.5 hours. This means there should be four charges left on the case. Thanks to their quick-charge technology, 10 minutes of charging the earbuds in its case gives you up to 1.5 hours of earbuds usage. The best part? A wireless dock can also charge the case.

Standing at S$199, the ROG Cetra True Wireless (Lazada | Shopee) does impress with its aesthetics and battery life, but falls short of other models in the market, which offer better audio, mic quality, and fit at a much lower price.
