Brendan Fraser And Rachel Weisz Reunite For ‘The Mummy’ Sequel

26 years after the original The Mummy film was released in 1999, Universal Pictures is returning to the beloved adventure franchise and bringing back its main duo, Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, for its upcoming fourth instalment.

The Mummy (1999)

As reported by Deadline, Fraser and Weisz, who appeared in the original movie and its 2001 sequel The Mummy Returns as Rick and Evelyn, respectively, are in talks to return for its sequel, although plot details for the new film remain under wraps. This isn’t the only reunion, either, as the project will also see director Radio Silence Productions and producer Project X Entertainment team up once again, following their work on the recent Scream films.

Based on Universal’s original movie monsters and a remake of the 1932 film of the same name, 1999’s The Mummy was directed by Stephen Sommers and followed adventurer Rick O’Connell as he teams up with an English Egyptologist Evelyn Carnahan and travels to Hamunaptra, the City of the Dead, accidentally awakening Imhotep, a cursed high priest with supernatural powers, in the process.

The Mummy would go on to become the sixth-highest-grossing film of 1999, and spawned two sequels: The Mummy Returns, which saw the return of both Fraser and Weisz, and 2008’s The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, where Fraser returned without Weisz. The franchise would go on to receive a prequel, The Scorpion King, in 2002, which itself would grow into a series of five films, alongside a failed Tom Cruise-led reboot in 2017, which was meant to kick off Universal’s Dark Universe interconnected monster franchise.

The Mummy Returns (2001)

Fraser is well-known as one of the biggest stars of the late ’90s and early 2000s, appearing in films such as 1997’s George of the Jungle and 2008’s Journey to the Center of the Earth, with the now 56-year-old once again rising to fame in 2022 following his Academy Award win for The Whale.

Weisz, who is also an Oscar winner for her work on 2005’s The Constant Gardener, recently made appearances in Prime Video’s 2023 psychological thriller miniseries Dead Ringers, alongside portraying the spy Melina Vostokoff in the 2021 Marvel superhero film Black Widow.
