Joseph Kosinski‘s big-screen reboot of the classic crime-fighting series Miami Vice has reportedly found one half of its leading duo, with Michael B. Jordan in early talks to star as Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs.

As reported by Variety, the Sinners and Black Panther star is set to take on the iconic role first introduced in the 1984 NBC TV series Miami Vice, which saw New York City cop Tubbs journey to Miami to find his brother’s murderer, crossing paths and teaming up with a local undercover detective, James “Sonny” Crockett, before eventually being transferred to Miami and becoming Crockett’s partner and best friend.

The role of Tubbs was originally portrayed by Philip Michael Thomas in the TV series, with Jamie Foxx (Django Unchained) taking up the role alongside Colin Farrell’s (Total Recall) Crockett in the 2006 Michael Mann film reboot of the same name. The role of Sonny Crockett has yet to be cast for the upcoming film.
According to its official logline, this new Miami Vice reboot “explores the glamour and corruption of mid-80s Miami” and is “inspired by the pilot episode and first season of the landmark television series that influenced culture and set the style of everything from fashion to filmmaking.” The film is directed by Kosinski, best known for blockbusters like Top Gun: Maverick and F1 the Movie, with its script penned by Dan Gilroy and Eric Singer.

Miami Vice is set to begin shooting next year, ahead of its planned theatrical release date on 6 August 2027.
