‘Horizon Zero Dawn’ Live-Action Film Sets Focus For 2027 Release

It may be a while before Aloy spearheads her own adventure on the silver screen, but we’ll take what we can, especially after Netflix’s live-action TV adaptation of Horizon Zero Dawn was cancelled last year. According to a new court document, Sony’s theatrical take on Guerrilla Games’ RPG is set to start filming next year for a planned 2027 release.

The news comes amid the company’s ongoing legal battle with Tencent over Light of Motiram, described as a “slavish clone” of the 2017 outing and its sequel, Forbidden West. Per the listing (via The Game Post), the script has already been completed, and the hunt for a director is underway.

“We are in development for a film based on Horizon in partnership with Columbia Pictures,” said Asad Qizilbash, head of PlayStation Productions. “We already have a working script and are actively searching for a director, with the goal of shooting the picture in 2026 and releasing it in 2027.”

The declaration also highlights the significance of protagonist Aloy to the PlayStation brand, who will be a “key icon in the anticipated film” and the “flywheel of franchise building.” There’s no confirmation on casting just yet, though Sadie Sink (Stranger Things 4) is often cited as the fan favourite to play the red-haired hunter.

Announced in January during Sony’s CES 2025 press conference, the feature project will mark the third collaboration between the industry giant and Columbia Pictures, following 2022’s Uncharted and 2023’s Gran Turismo. Story details remain under wraps, but it’s expected to adapt the events of the first Horizon title, following Aloy as she battles giant mechanical beasts with primitive weaponry, all while exploring a post-apocalyptic Earth to uncover more about her mysterious birth.

Slated for release in 2027, the Horizon Zero Dawn movie joins an expanding lineup from PlayStation Productions that includes Chad Stahelski’s Ghost of Tsushima filmSheldon Turner’s Days Gone movie, and new adaptations of Gravity RushHelldivers 2, and Ghost of Tsushima: Legends.
