‘Borderlands 4’ Breaks Franchise Sales Records, Tops Sept US Sales Charts

Gearbox Software’s looter shooter sequel, Borderlands 4, has seen respectable performance since its launch on 12 September, particularly in the United States, where it has outperformed its predecessor in terms of money made and has topped the September sales chart in the process.

This comes via US video game data company Circana, which states that Borderlands 4 was the best-selling premium video game of September, and the third best-selling game of 2025 in the US so far.

Additionally, as reported by Circana’s Mat Piscatella in a social media post, the game also “generated the highest launch month dollar sales of any title in franchise history, nearly 30% higher than the previous best, Borderlands 3”, setting new records for the franchise in terms of both revenue and how it is the first title to launch as the best-selling game of its release month.

Despite its sales performance, the game hasn’t been received particularly well, currently sitting at a “Mixed” review score on Steam, with only 56% of the 11,706 recent reviews being positive. Criticisms stem largely from the game’s poor technical state, with many users citing performance issues even on more powerful setups.

Aside from September, 2025’s best-selling game year-to-date in the US was NBA 2K26, which is yet another win for publisher Take-Two Interactive. This is followed by Capcom’s Monster Hunter: Wilds, with Borderlands 4 taking third place.
