The universe of Zootopia gets even bigger in Disney Lorcana’s upcoming 10th expansion, Whispers In The Well, set for release on 14 November 2025.

While the likes of Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde are no strangers to Lorcana, Geek Culture had a chance to peek into their main base of operations, the Zootopia – Police Headquarters location card, which expands the city’s footprint within the game.

lorcana Zootopia - Police Headquarters

Like many Steel ink cards, the Zootopia – Police Headquarters location card allows players to filter their hand early on to secure the best possible start. With its low cost, it can hit the field as early as the first turn, and once it’s in play, it earns 1 Lore each round the location remains active.

In terms of performance, the Zootopia – Police Headquarters holds its own among other uncommon-rarity locations seen so far in Lorcana. Its main drawback is the additional cost required each time you use its ability to filter your hand having to draw a card, pick to best of the lot, and discarding one. Compared to other locations that have been released, the ability is am on-rate trade-off for its consistency and flexibility. There will be a good chance the card will be included by default in the new Whispers In The Well preconstructed deck featuring Judy Hopps on the box art.

With Whispers In The Well being the first expansion to follow Fabled, it’ll be cool to see how the Steel archetype evolves in the current meta. Based on current meta decks, Steel pairs well with Amethyst, focusing on removing evasive cards through direct damage rather than digging for win conditions. It’s unlikely this new addition could shift the balance by itself, opening up new combinations and strategies.

We’re currently deep in spoiler season for Whispers In The Well, and if our hunch is right, the Zootopia expansion won’t stop here. It wouldn’t be surprising to see other iconic locations like Bunnyburrow or Tundratown join the lineup soon giving players even more reasons to explore the wild world of Zootopia in Lorcana.

If your lifelong love of pizza started with four turtle brothers in a New York sewer, you’re not alone.

With a release slated for 6 March 2026, Magic: The Gathering is teaming up with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT) for a crossover set that spans every era of the franchise. From the original black-and-white comics to the ‘80s cartoon, blockbuster films, and modern animated reboots, the franchise is all-encompassing across the mutant turtle multiverse. What’s missing are the excellent video game renditions which might be showcased down the line.

At New York Comic Con 2025, fans got their first sneak peek at the upcoming cards. Yes, your favourite turtles are all here, Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, and Michelangelo, each ready for battle in card form.

But the biggest reveal? A chase card signed by TMNT co-creator Kevin Eastman. Styled with the original comic art, this card is a major draw and will have collectors scrambling to get their hands on it.

magic the gathering

Most of the Magic: The Gathering community still remember the hype around the recent Spider-Man set. It started strong, but many felt the card variety didn’t go deep enough. With TMNT, expectations are high. Everyone’s hoping for a deeper cut into the turtle universe considering that it spans across four distinct generations.

With this reveal, Magic: The Gathering’s full 2026 lineup is now locked in with seven sets ready to launch ending off with a Star Trek set. While some groups of fans are more than happy to empty their wallets, the lack of a more substantial Magic: The Gathering high fantasy universe presence have left some of the original players alienated from the game they had grown up with.

Collect all 4 exclusive Magic: The Gathering | Marvel's Spider-Man cards!

The post These Hasbro’s Marvel Legends Figures Come Bundled With Exclusive Magic: The Gathering Foil Cards + Giveaway! appeared first on Geek Culture.

]]>

In a marvelous team-up crossing genres and game formats, Hasbro’s Marvel Legends has taken a huge swing with Magic: The Gathering (MTG), to introduce one of the world’s biggest collectible tabletop card game to an army of toy collectors and fans, by packing limited edition MTG cards from the upcoming Magic: The Gathering | Marvel’s Spider-Man with four Marvel Legends Marvel’s Spider-Man Figures.

The first wave of figures that embrace storytelling and play with a series of exclusive promo cards comprises Battle-Damaged Spider-Man, Mary Jane Watson (Iron Spider), Anti-Venom, and Man-Wolf. Packed with each of these Marvel Legends Figures is a traditional foil borderless Magic: The Gathering promo card that has artwork that matches the design of the Marvel Legends Figure.

In what comes as a surprise though, the cards and the figures show an intimate look at the legacy of Spider-Man, as each has its own unique history and legacy in the Web Crawler’s vast history, meaning collectors would want this series in their collection, and MTG players will want these cards to power their decks.

Marvel Legends Series Magic: The Gathering Battle-Damaged Spider-Man

Peter Parker has weathered many tough encounters, but he has always come back up, and while there have been numerous figures that show the battle-weary wall -rawler, this Spider-Man figure offers a new take, with a 1960s-styled face mask to match the character’s battle-damaged appearance in the comics.

The figure comes with over 20 points of articulation and seven accessories – an unmasked head sculpt, two ‘thwip’ web-shooting hands, two wall-crawling hands, web line, and web shield.

The exclusive foil Magic: The Gathering | Marvel’s Spider-Man card, “Spectacular Spider-Man”, can web-swing past your enemies or sacrifice himself for the greater good of the team.

Marvel Legends Series Magic: The Gathering Mary Jane Watson (Iron Spider)

Just as how Tony Stark was the reason Peter Parker donned the Iron Spider costume, it’s also the reason why Spidey’s one time-wife, Mary Jane Watson, wore the costume. After the Superhuman Registration Act was abolished, Stark recruited MJ to be his assistant.

When a villain overpowered both Spider-Man and Iron Man, MJ swung… wait, more like jumped, since she doesn’t have super agility, into action with the Iron Spider suit in THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN (2017) #15. It’s a one-time adventure, with an amazing cover art by the legendary Alex Rosee, and this variant is, in our opinion, the main draw of this set.

The figure comes with over 20 points of articulation and seven accessories – an alternate masked head sculpt, two ‘thwip’ web-shooting hands, and four articulated Iron Spider legs.

The exclusive foil Magic: The Gathering | Marvel’s Spider-Man card, “Iron Spider, Stark Upgrade”, improves your artifact army with +1/+1 counters and then converts those counters into resources to draw a card.

Marvel Legends Series Magic: The Gathering Agent Anti-Venom

A one-time bully turned ally, Peter Parker’s friend, Flash Thompson, continues his war against the alien symbiote with this Agent Anti-Venom figure inspired by the character’s appearance in Marvel’s Spider-Man comics. After losing his legs in a car accident, he bonded with the black Venom symbiote to become Agent Venom, before losing it and then bonding with a new symbiote to become a color-inverted version of his Agent Venom form, now as white Agent Anti-Venom.

The figure comes with over 20 points of articulation and 14 accessories – 4 alternate hands, 2 blast effects, 2 smoke effects, anti-venom tendrils, and an arsenal of weapon accessories.

The exclusive foil Magic: The Gathering | Marvel’s Spider-Man card “Anti-Venom, Horrifying Healer” can bring one of your creatures back to the battlefield. Anti-Venom gets stronger the more you damage him.

Marvel Legends Series Magic: The Gathering Man-Wolf

In the Spider-Man mythos, Spider-Man’s greatest critic is none other than The Daily Bugle’s gruff publisher J. Jonah Jameson, but few know that his son, astronaut John Jonah Jameson III, is Peter Parker’s friend.

His discovery of the mystical Godstone, an other-dimensional ruby on the moon turned him into the Man-Wolf and the figure comes with over 20 points of articulation and six accessories – two alternate hands, the sacred sword of Stargod, a bow, a loose arrow, and a quiver of arrows.

The exclusive foil Magic: The Gathering | Marvel’s Spider-Man double-sided card, “Colonel John Jameson (Hunter of the Fells)“ and “Man-Wolf (Ravager of the Fells)”, lets you enter the battlefield bringing a 2/2 wolf friend with you. Complete the transformation to Man-Wolf, grow stronger, and deal damage.

Tsuburaya Fields Entertainment International will also helm the return of its Ultraman Card Game at the event, hosting a Sealed format tournament where players have to open packs and build their decks on the spot, competing with each other for exclusive promotional cards. In addition, there will also be a stage event, where not only will new information about its much-anticipated first anniversary set be revealed, but fans will also get to meet the legendary Ultraman Tiga himself.

First Infinity Stone Debuts In Magic: The Gathering Marvel’s Spider-Man Crossover Set https://geekculture.co/infinity-soul-stone-debuts-in-magic-the-gathering-marvels-spider-man/ Fri, 01 Aug 2025 23:23:14 +0000 https://geekculture.co/?p=321706

One gem is set to change collecting Magic: The Gathering forever.

The post First Infinity Stone Debuts In Magic: The Gathering Marvel’s Spider-Man Crossover Set appeared first on Geek Culture.

]]>

It was inevitable. Since the first Marvel-themed Magic: The Gathering card landed in the franchise, it was certain that the Infinity Stones would eventually make their appearance.

After all, cards like Fist of Suns and a variant art of Arcane Signet, each alluding to the Infinity Gauntlet, have been teased in Magic: The Gathering. For years, fans speculated and yearned for a collision of two of the world’s most expansive pop culture universes: Marvel and Magic.

The power of the cosmos will present itself at the humble street level as the upcoming Marvel’s Spiderman Universes Beyond Magic: The Gathering set in the form of the Soul Stone.

infinity stone magic the gathering

The key aspect of the extended art Soul Stone card is the foiling treatment, which we presume is the maximum rarity the card can achieve. We last saw a similar treatment in the One Ring from the Lord of the Rings Universes Beyond set. Devoid of any text, players will have to remember the card’s ability to bring back creatures from the graveyard directly onto the battlefield after paying (or cheating) the hefty card cost.

infinity stone magic the gathering

One can safely assume that the Soul Stone will not be the first as players will be looking to assemble the rest of the Infinity Gems. The Soul Stone is likely the starting points for a broader phased release in which the six Infinity Stones will be distributed across various future Marvel Magic: The Gathering sets. If we’re to make an educated guess, once players have collected all six stones, and placing it within the Gauntlet, unlocking a special win condition would be the most natural outcome.

The only thing left then would be to do this –

Disney Lorcana: Fabled Set ‘Robin Hood – Capable Fighter’ Card Preview https://geekculture.co/lorcana-fabled-robin-hood-capable-fighter-card-preview/ Fri, 01 Aug 2025 10:00:00 +0000 https://geekculture.co/?p=321554

The fox is back to bring chaos back to the forest!

The post Disney Lorcana: Fabled Set ‘Robin Hood – Capable Fighter’ Card Preview appeared first on Geek Culture.

]]>

If you had missed out on getting onto the Lorcana trading card game bandwagon back in its initial release, the upcoming Fabled expansion, releasing on 29 August 2025, will help you easily get up to speed.

The key aspect of the Fabled expansion is not simply adding new cards. As with many trading card games as a whole, refreshing the meta is an important step in a game’s lifecycle. This would give newer players an opportunity to enter the game on a fresh slate. However, at the same time, it would inadvertently cause some friction amongst existing invested players who have their current cards rendered obsolete.

Lorcana is rotating out its earliest four sets (The First Chapter, Rise of the Floodborn, Into the Inklands, Ursula’s Return) from the “Core Constructed” competitive format. Although these sets will still be legal in the new “Infinity Constructed” format, this move brings a fresh metagame, ensuring new strategies and helping level the playing field for those who started after the earliest launches.

Brand new rarities spice up collecting and gameplay. The “Epic” rarity adds a shiny tier between Legendary and Enchanted, offering striking borderless art of past favorites, while “Iconic” rarity cards are sure to become coveted highlights for every collector.

Fabled stands out by reprinting over half of its card list from earlier sets. This is a huge win for anyone who missed iconic cards the first time around; fan favorites return with updated set symbols, new rarity treatments, and sometimes brand-new art or foiling styles.

Enter Robin Hood

Lorcana - Fabled 'Robin Hood - Capable Fighter'

Originally printed in the second Lorcana expansion, Rise of the Floodborn, Robin Hood – Capable Fighter returns to control the early game and get rid of small, key support characters in an exclusive reveal to Geek Culture ahead of the Fabled set’s release.

Here are some ways you’ll see this legend used to maximum effect –

Synergy Plays: Pair Robin Hood with cards that trigger off damaged characters or amplify direct damage. Equipment like Robin’s Bow or supportive locations can multiply his impact.

Continuous Threat: His ability makes opponents second-guess leaving fragile characters out, forcing more conservative strategies and gaining you tempo.

Combo Potential: Decks that can repeatedly ready Robin with effects or recover him quickly can use his ping multiple times per game, locking down the board.

The biggest benefit of playing Robin Hood – Capable Fighter would be having the option to shift into Robin Hood – Champion of Sherwood (though as of writing we are unsure if this card will be available in the new meta) or the existing Robin Hood – Sneaky Slueth who will linger on in the metagame a while longer, allowing him to gain greater relevance in the late game as well.

As the spoiler season rolls on, we shall see if Robin Hood goes back to his old ways or gains a new form to wreak terror on the battlefield. We know for sure that Robin Hood will be joining up with Officer Judy Hopps in the upcoming Whispers in the Well preconstructed deck, with the other fox favourite Nick Wilde nowhere to be seen.

On the upside, if you already have a playset of Robin Hood – Capable Fighter, you’ll be able to continue using him until 2027 before the card gets possibly rotated out once again.

Prepping for the climb into the world of tabletop gaming.

The post Magic: The Gathering X ‘Spider-Man’ Crossover Takes A Swing At Revealing First 6 Cards appeared first on Geek Culture.

]]>

Fresh off the massive high of its Final Fantasy VII collaboration, Wizards of the Coast is back with yet another Universes Beyond outing. This time, the focus is on your friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man, as he swings into the world of Magic: The Gathering this September in different forms — six of which have been revealed.

An exclusive first-look by IGN features a double-sided Peter Parker, which flips over into Amazing Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2099, SP//dr, Spider-Noir, and Spider-Ham, promising a fair amount of Into the Spider-Verse representation. There’s also an alternate art version of the Mythic Rare Peter Parker card that will bring the pages of Spider-Man’s adventures to life, though the design remains under wraps for now. The last on the list is Origin of Spider-Man, and all of them can be viewed below:

Mechanics-wise, it’s interesting that the Peter Parker card offers a mana-cost option to flip it over while the front side is already in play. Traditionally, “modal double-faced cards” allow players to choose which face they want to cast before putting them onto the battlefield, but here, two mana is required to play Peter Parker, and consuming four more on a later turn transforms him. Doing so unlocks a special ability called web-slinging, where casting three mana returns a tapped creature to the hand.

The Magic: The Gathering X Spider-Man preview comes as part of San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) 2025, taking place from 24 to 28 July at San Diego Convention Centre, and pretty much aligns with Wizards of the Coast’s earlier confirmation that it won’t be limited to a single comic run or series.

The full set launches on 26 September and will include six previously announced cards from the Spidey’s Spectacular Showdown Scene Box: Grasping Tentacles; Venom, Deadly Devourer; Green Goblin, Nemesis; Doc Ock, Evil Inventor; Sensational Spider-Man, and Pumpkin Bombs.

Promo cards are highly sought after by the trading card community, and this is by far one of the easiest ways for Disney fans to get hold of one. All you have to do, is show up, play the demo game, and receive your card.

But, just in case you’re looking to get into the game proper, the event will be a good way to get hold of Lorcana booster boxes from Set 1, all the way to the current Set 8 booster box – Reign of Jafar.

Do note that as a new player, you do not need to have all the cards from the past to play competitively. At this point of time, only sets from Shimmering Skies (Set 5) to Reign of Jafar (Set 8) will be legal for competitive play from September 2025 onwards.

If you’re wondering why a trading card game will be heading to VivoCity of all places, it would have to do with the massive Stitch movie promotional venue which you should check out at the same time –

Here's a way to get your Magic: The Gathering Final Fantasy journey started on the right foot.

The post Power Up Magic: The Gathering Final Fantasy Deals At Local Retailer Hideout’s Play Event appeared first on Geek Culture.

]]>

As the worlds of Magic: The Gathering and Final Fantasy collide, the response could not have been more assuring for both Wizards of the Coast and Square Enix. With booster boxes of the latest Magic: The Gathering expansion flying off the shelves at lightning speed, fans and new entrants to the trading card game will find it hard to get hold of their desired product.

However, pockets of supply do exist in the market. As we head into the full release of the hotly contested set, Singapore local game store Hideout, is organising an event where you could get your hands on more Magic: The Gathering Final Fantasy product.

Festivities kick off this weekend (14 – 15 June 2025) at Suntec City, Singapore. Here are the top picks and deals to check out.

Commander Lucky Bag

magic the gathering

We first spotted this bundle back in Singapore Comic Con 2024 where Hideout’s booth offered “fukubukuro” (Japanese-style mystery bags) filled with value. Fast forward to 2025, the upcoming Commander Lucky Bag has everything to kickstart your Magic: The Gathering journey for S$138.

Keep in mind that not all the bags will have Final Fantasy product, but it’s still a solid deal all around.

If you’d prefer a product with more certainty, the following option is a good alternative –

The starter kit comes with two cards featuring Cloud and Sephiroth that can only be found within the set, plus you get everything else from deckboxes, sleeves, and two more booster packs for a bundle price of S$60 to protect the collection.

Sealed Events

One of the best ways to learn Magic: The Gathering is in a low-stakes, level-playing-field event where everyone uses the same pool of cards. In a sealed format, players build a 40-card deck from six booster packs and face off against other players. It’s a great way to test your luck and skills on equal footing.

Pre-registration is needed for this weekend’s event, so grab your tickets before they are sold out.

Chocobo Racing Event Series

Magic: The Gathering – Final Fantasy ‘The Masamune’ Card Preview https://geekculture.co/magic-the-gathering-final-fantasy-the-masamune-card-preview/ Wed, 28 May 2025 07:00:00 +0000 https://geekculture.co/?p=317531

Hide your party's main healer when this blade comes swinging your way!

The post Magic: The Gathering – Final Fantasy ‘The Masamune’ Card Preview appeared first on Geek Culture.

]]>

Are you looking for a magical fantasy during the summer holidays? You will find that (and a ton of fun) with Magic: the Gathering’s newest and biggest set release since Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth. Set for release on June 14th, the Final Fantasy mega crossover is part of Magic’s Universes Beyond line, and promises legendary heroes and villains, powerful equipment and an unrivalled sense of nostalgia for anyone who grew up playing the games. Geek Culture and Tap & Sac are thrilled to reveal a very special preview card that even casual Final Fantasy fans will recognise: The Masamune!

What’s the Big Deal with The Masamune and Who Uses It?

The Masamune is one of the most iconic weapons across franchise history, wielded none other by Sephiroth, the big bad of Final Fantasy VII. More than just a normal odachi blade, it symbolises his might as the game’s penultimate and final boss – while its handle is long enough to accommodate both hands, Sephiroth carries it single-handedly due to his incredible strength.

Much of the detail is carried over to the card design, including its gold-coloured tsuba, or guard, and curving angle, which varies across depictions but is never entirely straight (as seen on the left). The top-down perspective, with its tip pointing at the player, also references his infamous method of impalement instead of slashing, the traditional way of using the weapon. Meanwhile, the side stance Sephiroth adopts in the later games is reflected in the other card, showcasing a slightly lowered blade that falls under its own weight.

How is The Masamune as an Equipment in Magic?

The Masamune is no slouch and certainly lives up to its name as Sephiroth’s legendary weapon. When equipped, the creature wielding it gains First Strike and must be blocked if able. While it doesn’t have any triggers when dealing combat damage to a player (unlike other swords such as Sword of Fire and Ice), The Masamune supplies an additional benefit: “If a creature dying causes a triggered ability of this creature or an emblem you own to trigger, that ability triggers an additional time.”

That was rather wordy, so it’s worth noting a few things:

 • The Masamune must be equipped onto a creature for it to be in effect.
 • The extra triggered ability only applies to the creature that The Masamune is equipped to. If the creature doesn’t have any triggered abilities, then The Masamune is merely a glorified long sword.
 • Likewise with emblems, you need to have a death-triggering emblem for an extra triggered ability to happen. For example, The Masamune will not work with most emblems (like Chandra, Torch of Defiance’s emblem), but will work with the also-new Sephiroth, One-Winged Angel’s emblem

How Does The Masamune Compare with Other Strong Magic Swords?

Swords are the most-loved Equipment in Magic history, and as you would expect, is very well represented. There have been some very strong swords that have become just as mythical in Magic’s lore as a sword as The Masamune in the Final Fantasy realms. Let’s look at two other famous Magic swords and see how it compare with The Masamune.

Sword of Feast and Famine

Arguably one of the most powerful swords among the 10 of its cycle, Sword of Feast and Famine gives equipped creature protection from black and green, and +2/+2 stats. After connecting with a player, you get to untap all your Lands and force the opponent to discard a card. In short, every granted effect is going to get you ahead, especially when you can untap all your Lands and cast another few spells. Protection from two colours is also tough to get around, giving your creature added resilience.

The Masamune, on the other hand, doesn’t offer any protection or evasion, but instead goads the opponent to block. With First Strike, there’s a pretty good chance your creature will come out victorious. A Final Fantasy deck filled with death triggers will find The Masamune more useful, but in nearly every other scenario, Sword of Feast and Famine is going to be top pick.

Sword of the Animist

Another fan-favourite of Magic players, Sword of the Animist fits into the utility category, able to expand your mana base by searching for a Land and placing it directly onto the battlefield. The +1/+1 buff is not going to be that much of a game changer, but it’s offset by the sword’s low 2-mana cost and equip.

The Masamune is clearly a better offensive tool than Sword of the Animist, and depending on what creature you have equipped, The Masamune can also outshine Sword of the Animist in pure value. For example, a Zulaport Cutthroat with The Masamune is going to be draining each opponent for 2 life instead of 1 when it triggers. That could happen any number of times you can muster, rather than just once per attack as is the case with Sword of the Animist.

End Step

The Masamune is certainly going into every deck with Sephiroth, just for the sheer pleasure of having him swing his iconic sword, not to mention its ability synergises perfectly with Sephiroth, One-Winged Angel’s emblem. For most other decks, The Masamune is going to be quite situational and falls lower in the pecking order of powerful Final Fantasy Equipment. But with the Buster Sword also an actual Magic card, clashing both blades in a game would be a wonderful treat.

The House of Mouse’s foray into the tabletop scene seems to be paying off, as Disney Lorcana Trading Card Game (TCG) turns to Asia for its next expansion effort. Two years after launching in the U.S. and Europe, fans in Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and more will be able to purchase English-language card packs starting this September.

With the announcement comes official support for same-day product releases and tournament prizes, extending first to the TCG’s ninth set, “Fabled”, which hits the new markets listed above in September 2025, coinciding with the worldwide launch.

“Disney Lorcana TCG is truly a global phenomenon, and this news reinforces that fact for fans all over the world,” said Elaine Chase, Chief Marketing Officer for TCGs at Ravensburger in Seattle. “We at Ravensburger are excited to welcome even more fans from Asia into the Lorcana community by making these beautiful cards more readily available to collect, play, and share in their local game stores.”

Saka Saka will be the distributor for Disney Lorcana TCG in Asia, creating a network of hobby stores throughout the region. The company is also looking to work with Ravensburg to facilitate local tournaments and carve out a path to the next World Championships, similar to other markets.

More information about the activities leading up to the launch in September is expected in due time. The collectable card game features decks of at least 60 cards, with players producing “ink, a resource that allows cards representing characters, items, and song lyrics from Disney media to be summoned. Centred on a fairy tale theme, the Fabled set will mark the third release of 2025 after Archazia’s Island and Reign of Jafar.

As Magic: The Gathering gears up for a new tabletop journey with Final Fantasy this June, Wizards of the Coast is fuelling the hype by revealing a slew of new cards and a first look at set-exclusive features.

This fresh look comes after the reveal of four Commander cards, featuring Final Fantasy VII‘s Cloud, Y’shtola (FFXIV), Tidus (FFX) and Terra (FFVI). Fans can expect more familiar faces in the mix, including Yuffie, Cecil, Sephiroth, and more, alongside design variations of these characters and franchise staples like the Moogle, Cactuar, and Chocobo.

New Food token art and double-faced cards were also showcased, with the special Summons mechanic introducing the card game’s first-ever Saga creatures that can be called upon to the battlefield for extra assistance, mirroring the ability to do so in Square Enix’s beloved series of JRPGs.

Here’s a quick look at some of the newly unveiled cards (the official website has more of them):

The Magic: The Gathering’s Final Fantasy set will feature over 100 legendary creature cards, with some of its 55 legendary borderless cards illustrated by fan-favourite artists across franchise history. Yoshitaka Amano, a frequent collaborator on the long-running title, is contributing special artwork for the crossover effort, which releases on 13 June. The Standard set is fully draftable, set to launch alongside four preconstructed Commander decks and a Collector’s Edition.

‘BlackBerry’ Director Circling Legendary And Hasbro’s ‘Magic: The Gathering’ Film https://geekculture.co/blackberry-director-circling-legendary-hasbro-magic-the-gathering-film/ Fri, 11 Apr 2025 04:21:42 +0000 https://geekculture.co/?p=315054

Matt Johnson may command the planes.

Mana may not tap itself, but Hasbro seems eager to find the right filmmaker who can bring Magic: The Gathering from the tabletop to the big screen. After years of stops, starts, and vague promises, the company appears to be circling Matt Johnson, director of the critically acclaimed BlackBerry, to helm its long-gestating live-action adaptation. According to Deadline, Hasbro and Legendary Pictures have approached Johnson with the idea, though nothing has been finalised.

Johnson, best known for his offbeat and self-aware storytelling in The Dirties and Nirvana the Band the Show, brings a sensibility far removed from the typically solemn lore of Magic: The Gathering. BlackBerry, for instance, turned a business-tech biopic into one of the most entertaining films of its year. If that sensibility translates to mana and multiverses, Magic: The Gathering might avoid falling into the self-serious trap that can plague genre fare.

No word yet on which storyline Hasbro and Legendary plan to adapt. With decades of lore, dozens of Planeswalkers, and planes ranging from gothic horror to high fantasy, there’s no shortage of material. Whether the first film focuses on a single character arc, such as Jace Beleren or Liliana Vess, or attempts to establish a broader narrative like the Phyrexian invasion or the rise and fall of Urza remains to be seen.

Meanwhile, Hasbro is making no secret of its broader ambitions. The company has already announced plans for additional Magic-related projects, including potential television adaptations, both animated and live-action. A successful film launch could give those expansions a strong narrative anchor. Still, without a signed director or a confirmed screenwriter, it remains a waiting game.

Given that Magic: The Gathering generates hundreds of millions annually and holds a global player base that’s both passionate and lore-literate, expectations are high. Whoever takes the director’s chair will be tasked with building not just a film, but a cinematic gateway into a world that’s lived in the imagination of players for over three decades.

Whether Johnson ends up officially attached or not, the move signals that Hasbro is looking beyond just spectacle. They’re betting on voice, vision, and maybe even a little humour in a franchise that, until now, has rarely smiled.
