‘Death Stranding’ Animated Series Finds Home On Disney+ With 2027 Release

Hideo Kojima is expanding his groundbreaking delivery simulator game franchise, Death Stranding, with an upcoming animated series, which is now in the works at Disney+ for a 2027 release.

As reported by Variety, Kojima took to the stage alongside series director Sano Takayuki at the Disney+ originals Asia Pacific preview to reveal the animated series, now with the working title Death Stranding Isolations, which is set to debut exclusively on the streamer in 2027.

In addition, the reveal also came alongside the unveiling of the show’s concept art by Ilya Kuvshinov, who previously worked as the character designer for the 2020 Netflix animated series, Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045. Death Stranding Isolations will also mark the first partnership between Kojima Productions and Disney+.

Unlike the franchise’s other game-to-screen adaptation, the live-action A24 movie, which is expected to follow the events of game protagonist Sam Porter Bridges, the animated series will journey into unfamiliar territory for fans of Death Stranding, telling a completely original story while still set in the same post-apocalyptic world, with Disney+ also providing a brief outline of the series, describing that it will “tell a completely new story, separate from that of the video games” and that its plot “will follow a young man and woman as they set out on an adventure”, which was also teased by its concept art, which features a duo decked out in the game’s iconic Power Skeleton suit.

Speaking at the event, Kojima explained that the series will be “pretty mind-blowing” and that he wanted to expand the franchise into the animated format as it afforded him the ability to do things that could only be done with animation, adding that fans of the games can expect new and different characters they won’t be familiar with.

Kojima will serve as executive producer of Death Stranding Isolations, with Takayuki Sano (Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods) directing the animated series. The show will also feature a traditional hand-drawn 2D animation style, with well-known Japanese animation studio E&H Production (Ninja Kamui, Bullet/Bullet) attached to the project.

Death Stranding Isolations is set to premiere on Disney+ in 2027.
